Vitamin A explained: retinol, retinal and why you should start low

A plain guide to vitamin A skincare: what it does, how retinyl esters, retinol and retinal compare, and how to build up gently with the Environ STEP-UP SYSTEM.

Vitamin A is the ingredient skin therapists talk about most, and the one customers most often get wrong at the start. Too much, too soon, and skin feels tight, dry and cross. Built up slowly, it becomes one of the most useful steps in a long-term routine.

This guide to vitamin A skincare for beginners is for anyone new to the ingredient, or anyone who tried retinol once and gave up. We'll cover what it does, how the different forms compare, how the Environ Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM works, and how to pair it with the rest of your products.

What vitamin A does for your skin

Vitamin A is a family of ingredients often grouped under the name retinoids. In skincare, it is valued because it supports the skin's natural renewal, so over time skin tends to look smoother, more even and more refreshed.

With consistent use, vitamin A helps to:

  • improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles
  • soften the appearance of uneven tone and dull patches
  • refine the look of texture and enlarged pores
  • support a firmer, plumper looking complexion

It is a slow ingredient. Most people need several weeks of regular use before they notice a difference, and the best results come from months, not days.

The forms of vitamin A and how they differ

Skin has to convert cosmetic vitamin A, step by step, into retinoic acid, the form skin cells actually respond to. The more conversion steps an ingredient needs, the gentler it tends to be. The fewer steps, the stronger it tends to feel.

Retinyl esters

Retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate are the gentlest forms. They sit furthest from retinoic acid, so they are well suited to first-time users and sensitive skin. Retinyl palmitate is also the main form in which skin naturally stores vitamin A, and it is the backbone of Environ's AVST moisturisers.

Retinol

Retinol is one step closer and noticeably more active. It is the most familiar name on labels and comes in a wide range of strengths, which is why it is so easy to overdo.

Retinaldehyde (retinal)

Retinal sits just one step away from retinoic acid, so it works faster and can feel stronger than retinol at a similar level. It is usually best saved until your skin is comfortable with retinol.

Strength depends on both the form and the amount, as well as how the formula is made. A low retinol can feel gentler than a high ester formula, so always judge by how your skin responds, not just the label.

Why you should start low and build up

When skin first meets vitamin A, it needs time to adjust. In the first few weeks it is common to notice dryness, light flaking, tightness or a little extra sensitivity. This is often called the adjustment phase, and it usually settles as skin gets used to the ingredient.

Starting low keeps that phase mild. A sensible approach:

  1. Begin with a gentle form or low strength, two or three evenings a week.
  2. Increase to every other evening, then nightly, once skin feels comfortable.
  3. Only move to a stronger product after several weeks of comfortable nightly use.

If skin becomes red, sore or stings for more than a moment, step back to the previous level and give it more time. Persistent irritation is a reason to stop and speak to a GP, pharmacist or dermatologist.

Our team's tip: if your skin feels dry or tingly in the early weeks, don't give up. Stay on your current level for longer before stepping up, keep the rest of your routine simple, and ask us if you're unsure.

How the Environ step-up system works

Environ was founded by Dr Des Fernandes, a plastic surgeon who built the brand around vitamin A and antioxidants. Its Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM follows exactly the start low, build up approach, so skin gets used to vitamin A gradually.

The Skin EssentiA AVST moisturisers run from 1 to 5, each with a progressively higher level of vitamin A alongside vitamin C and antioxidants. Most people begin with Environ AVST 1, use the full bottle, then move on to AVST 2 and beyond as their skin is ready. There is no need to rush to the top step. Many people stay at a level that suits them for a long time.

If you plan to stay on a step for a while, each AVST level from 1 to 5 is also available as a duo, starting with the Environ AVST 1 Duo. You'll find them all in our Environ Duos & Routines collection.

If your skin is very sensitive or reactive, your consultation may suggest starting on the lightweight Environ AVST Gel before AVST 1.

Once skin is comfortable on the higher AVST steps, Environ's Youth+ range adds a more concentrated option. The Youth+ Tri-Retinoid Complex Retinol Serum combines three forms of vitamin A, including retinol, and the Retinol Serum Forte is a later step again.

Environ is consultation-led. You can place your order as normal, then complete a short skin consultation, and our team reviews and approves the order so you start at the right step.

Other vitamin A options to consider

If you'd rather start with a single retinol serum, there are good choices outside Environ too. The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum is a practical next step for skin that is already comfortable with gentler vitamin A.

Dermaceutic Activ Retinol 0.5 is a lighter strength in the Dermaceutic range, with Activ Retinol 1.0 as a later step once skin is well adjusted.

You can compare every option in our vitamin A and retinol collection. Stick to one vitamin A product at a time while you are building up, so you can see clearly how your skin is responding.

Using vitamin A with other actives

Vitamin A works well within a full routine, as long as you keep things simple at first.

  • Vitamin C: use it in the morning and keep vitamin A for the evening. Together they make a strong day and night pairing.
  • Exfoliating acids: AHAs, BHAs and strong peels can add to dryness. Use them on different evenings, and pause them during your first few weeks on vitamin A.
  • Hydrators: hyaluronic acid, ceramides and a comforting moisturiser are helpful companions, especially early on.
  • New products: introduce one at a time, a couple of weeks apart, so you know what is working.

Be gentle with cleansing and avoid scrubs while skin is adjusting.

SPF every day

A daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is part of any vitamin A routine. Renewing skin can be more sensitive to the sun, and UV exposure undoes much of the progress you are working towards.

Apply a generous amount every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply through the day if you are outdoors. A lightweight fluid such as Heliocare 360 Age Active Fluid SPF50 helps protect against UVA and UVB and sits comfortably under makeup.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, check with your GP or midwife before using any vitamin A skincare. They can advise on what is right for you. Our team is also happy to suggest alternative routines in the meantime.

Finding your starting point

The right first step depends on your skin, your current routine and how sensitive you are. Take our skin quiz for personalised suggestions, or get in touch with our team and we'll help you choose where to begin.
