Skincare acids explained

Acids help skin shed dull surface cells and look smoother and brighter. AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acid work on the surface for texture and tone, BHAs such as salicylic acid work inside pores for blemish-prone skin, and PHAs such as gluconolactone are the gentlest, suiting sensitive skin. Hyaluronic acid is different: it hydrates rather than exfoliates. Start slowly and wear SPF daily.

"Acid" sounds harsh, but in skincare it covers a broad and mostly gentle family. Some acids exfoliate, some hydrate and some are vitamins under another name, so it helps to know which kind you're looking at before adding one to your routine.

The main types

  • Exfoliating acids: AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acid, BHAs such as salicylic acid, and gentler PHAs like gluconolactone. They loosen dead skin cells for a smoother, brighter look.
  • Hydrating acids: hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin's surface layers to help it look plump.
  • Antioxidant acids: ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and lipoic acid help skin cope with everyday UV and pollution.
  • Fatty acids: found in plant oils and barrier creams, they help keep skin soft and comfortable.

Introduce exfoliating acids slowly, two or three evenings a week, and wear SPF every morning, as they can make skin more sensitive to the sun. Hydrating and antioxidant acids are far gentler and fit into most routines straight away. If you're unsure what to combine, our team is happy to help.
