Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), traditionally derived from sugar cane. It has the smallest molecule of the AHAs, so it works efficiently to loosen dead skin cells on the surface. The result is smoother texture, a brighter look and better absorption of the products that follow.
Very sensitive skin may prefer a larger, gentler acid such as lactic or mandelic acid, or a PHA.
Start with a lower-strength toner or cleanser two or three evenings a week. Environ's Youth+ Concentrated Alpha Hydroxy Toner and Dermaceutic Foamer 15 are popular options. Increase use gradually, avoid other strong exfoliants on the same night, and apply SPF every morning, as AHAs can make skin more sensitive to the sun. Mild tingling is normal; burning or lasting redness is a sign to stop.
