Vitamin B5 (panthenol)

Panthenol, or pro-vitamin B5, hydrates and soothes. It helps skin hold on to moisture and feel calmer, which makes it a useful ingredient for dry, sensitive and post-treatment skin, and for anyone using vitamin A or acids.

AboutVitamin B5

Vitamin B5 usually appears as panthenol or pro-vitamin B5 on ingredient lists, and skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It's a humectant, so it draws in water, and it has a soothing, softening effect that helps skin feel comfortable.

Who it suits

  • Dry or dehydrated skin
  • Sensitive or easily irritated skin
  • Skin feeling tight or flaky from vitamin A or exfoliating acids
  • Skin that feels the effects of wind and cold weather

Panthenol is very well tolerated and works with almost any other ingredient, so you can use it morning and night. It's often found in hydrating serums, eye gels and blemish gels, where it helps offset the drying effect of other actives. Environ includes it in products such as the Clarity+ Sebu-Spot Blemish Gel.

Apply serums to slightly damp skin and follow with moisturiser to lock the hydration in.
