Skincare for pigmentation and uneven tone

Dark spots, sun marks and patchy tone respond best to patience and protection. Brightening ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid and gentle acids help even out the look of skin, while vitamin A supports a smoother, more uniform complexion. None of this works without a broad-spectrum SPF every day, as UV makes marks look darker.

Look at Environ Radiance+, Dermalogica PowerBright and Heliocare Pigment Solution as starting points.

AboutPigmentation

Pigmentation happens when skin makes extra melanin in certain areas. Sun exposure is the main trigger, but hormones, heat and inflammation from breakouts or irritation can all leave darker patches behind. Deeper skin tones are often more prone to marks after spots or irritation.

What to look for

  • Broad-spectrum SPF every day, reapplied when outdoors. Nothing else works well without it.
  • Vitamin C to brighten and even the look of tone
  • Vitamin A to support skin renewal
  • Niacinamide, kojic acid and gentle acids to fade the look of dark spots

A simple routine: antioxidant serum and SPF in the morning, a brightening or vitamin A product at night. Be patient, as changes take weeks. Environ's Radiance+ Intense C-Boost Mela-Even Cream, Dermaceutic Mela Cream and NeoStrata Enlighten are popular choices.

See your GP or a dermatologist about patches that are spreading or very persistent, and have any mole or spot that changes in size, shape or colour checked promptly.
