Beta-Carotene
What It Is

Carotenoids are natural plant pigments that give plants and fruits their colour. Beta-Carotene is a carotenoid found primarily in carrots and provides a yellow to orange-red colour to personal care products. In addition, it is an approved colouring agent for foods. Besides carrots, it naturally occurs in vegetables (sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and squash), fruits (apricots, cantaloupe melon, mango, paw, nectarines, and peaches).

Chemically, carotenoids are tetraterpenoids and constitute a class of labile, easily oxidizable, and oil-soluble compounds consisting of 40-carbon polyunsaturated hydrocarbon molecules. The body converts beta-carotene into Vitamin A using a carotenoid oxygenase enzyme (Beta-carotene 15,15'-dioxygenase), providing effects similar to retinoids. Unfortunately, that enzyme is only active in the intestine and liver, and produced retinal can only reach the skin from the bloodstream.

Beta-carotene is recommended in skincare products where it can be used to condition rough or reddened skin. Because of its Beta-Carotene content, the extract may be added to sun care or tanning preparations. In addition, a European report claims that carotenes appear to exhibit specific properties, which may help screen against the effects of UV radiation and free radicals. With vitamin E and C, it forms the trio of antioxidant vitamins frequently used together for a preventive effect on skin disorders, unhealthy conditions, or even cancer. This ingredient also may be used in baby products, night or day creams, and treatment oils that help maintain the skin's healthy function.

What It Does

How to use in your skincare routine?

In cosmetics and personal care products, Beta-carotene is used in the formulation of aftershave lotions, bath products, cleansing products, makeup, hair conditioners, shampoos, skin care products and suntan products. Beta-carotene imparts an orange colour to cosmetics and personal care products.

Benefits

Beta-carotene is commonly implemented into skincare formulations for its ability to protect against UVA-light induced damage. By doing so, products infused with beta carotene can help to reduce levels of oxidative stress and contribute to the overall enhancement of one's skin appearance.

Vitamin A / Retinol
What It Is

Vitamin A / Retinol plays a bunch of key roles in the body, and it’s essential when it comes to the health of your skin. It’s involved in the production of fresh, new cells, which keeps your skin both functioning and looking its best.

Vitamin A contains retinoids, compounds that come in many forms such as:

  • Retinol - Once in the middle layer of skin, retinol helps neutralise free radicals. This helps boost the production of elastin and collagen, which creates a “plumping” effect that can reduce the appearance of, fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores
  • Retinyl -This is the least irritating of all four retinoids, it's a great option for almost all skin types and anyone who wants to keep their pores clear and skin youthful. It promotes skin cell turnover, improves skin tone, helps unclog pores and helps thicken the dermis to slow down the formation of wrinkles.
  • Retinal - This is the only retinoid that exhibits direct antibacterial properties. This makes it perfect for those prone to blemishes. With continued use, it diminishes the bacteria responsible for breakouts to leave skin looking clear, radiant and youthful.
What It Does

How to use in your skincare routine?

We recommend them as part of a nightly skin care routine, when most people don’t mind adding an extra step or two. But it’s also fine to use Vitamin A / Retinol in the daytime, as long as you finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater.

Don’t forget—when you apply your Vitamin A / Retinol product, be sure to include your neck and chest so you get those amazing benefits there, too.

Benefits

Retinoids can help exfoliate skin on the surface, removing dirt, oil, and dead skin cells from pores to prevent pimples. They also penetrate the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen and elastin production, which can help reduce the appearance of pores and acne scarring.

Vitamin A / Retinol , works to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production.
